Ron Allen: Inside Polo

FACU’S BANNER YEAR

By Ron Allen

It all started with the hoisting of the U.S. Open trophy in Florida back in April. 27-year-old Facundo Pieres had just won the Argentine Open in December and now, four months later, he’s on the winner’s podium for the second year in a row as the champion of America’s biggest polo tournament.

Then it was on to England, as the globe trotting ten goaler would claim victory in both the Queens Cup and the Gold Cup. His success in the UK and the US was the result of an outstanding polo partnership with Lyndon Lea.

Polo’s Boy Wonder continues to impress in Spain as he teamed with older brother, Gonzalo, to win the Silver Cup. The all-important Gold Cup at Sotogrande may well be within his reach. If he is successful in that outing it will make five major wins in a row this year.

Following in the very large footsteps of super stars Adolfo Cambiaso and Carlos Gracida he will then focus on the all-important Argentine Triple Crown. No easy task considering the quality of high goal talent that will take to the field this year and in years past. Adolfo has won three consecutive at Palermo earlier in this decade. In 1994 Carlos won every tournament he played in which included the big three in Argentina.

Setting the bar to new heights in 2013 and Facundo appears to be taking in stride “I’ll be going step by step. After Sotogrande then the Argentine season to play with all our might, because a very tough season awaits us.”
