INSIDE POLO with Ron Allen
W inter has arrived in south Florida and so have 7,000 horses and polo professionals
and patrons from eight different countries around the world. It’s America’s biggest
season for the sport and a full slate of games will be played over the next four
months ranging from 4 to 26 goals. There are 60 fields in Wellington ready for
players to tear up the turf.
The first half of the high goal season features fifteen teams in the 20-goal
competition. Several teams did not return this season including Heathcote,
MetalTek, Alegria, Valiente II and Circa. Two new entries in the 20 are Goose Creek
captioned by Maureen Brennan and La Herradura with the Gracida brothers, Memo
and Carlos, reunited for the first time since the Camacho Cup in 2009.
Three 10 goal players have arrived from Argentina to participate; Adolfo Cambiaso
with Valiente, Miguel Astrada for Piaget and Facundo Pieres back again with Zacara.
Patron George Rawlings has returned after abruptly dropping out of the 26 goal last
year. He has teamed up with Mariano Aguerre who is coming off of an upset win
over La Dolfina last month in the Argentine Open. Aguerre was moved back to 10
goals following that big win but will be playing at 9 goals this winter in the U.S.
